What Makes Custom Panels So Different?

When you choose Custom Panels from Lady Dianne’s, you’re not choosing from a limited selection of sizes, colors and styles. You’re starting with a blank canvas — and together we fill it with exactly what your room needs. More fullness. More lushness. More of everything that makes a Panel look like it belongs exactly where it is and nowhere else.

And the details — oh, the details!! A beautiful trim along the leading edge. Crystal or covered buttons. Two fabrics pieced together in a way nobody else would think of. Hardware that makes you stop and stare — because Decorative Hardware is the jewelry of your Window Treatment, and the right piece makes everything extraordinary.

There are endless ways to make your Panels completely and uniquely yours. And I genuinely love coming up with something I’ve never done before. ๐Ÿ’–

The Decisions Behind Every Pair of Panels

Here’s something that might surprise you — there are more than a dozen different kinds of pleats alone. More than a dozen!! Most people have no idea. ๐Ÿ˜„

Right now my favorites are Cartridge Pleats — a little more modern, they let the fabric speak for itself beautifully. For something more classic I love Goblet Pleats — perfect for adding buttons for a really special detail. And for my more traditional Clients, three finger French Pleats are my go-to — updated traditional, elegant and timeless.

But pleats are just the beginning. Every pair of Custom Panels involves decisions about what type of lining — and yes, lining matters enormously to how your Panels hang, how they look and how long they last. Whether to add interlining for extra body and luxury. How far out to extend beyond the window frame — because going wider makes the window look larger and lets in more light when the Panels are open.

And if we’re color blocking — how large each section should be. Here’s a little design secret: if you want the top and bottom sections to look the same size, you actually have to make the bottom section larger. Crazy, right?! But your eye needs that to read them as equal. That’s the kind of thing 32 years teaches you. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

How High Should Your Panels Go?

So how high should you go? Well, here’s where it gets interesting — and this is something that might surprise you.

Going higher is almost always right. But going all the way to the ceiling? That’s actually one of the most common myths I run into. People see floor-to-ceiling Draperies on Pinterest or in a magazine and think — more height equals more impact. But here’s the thing. If you mount your treatment all the way at the ceiling, your eye has nowhere new to land. There’s no new line for your mind to recognize. So ironically, your window ends up feeling the same size it always did. You went all the way up and gained nothing.

What actually works — what I do in almost every home — is finding that sweet spot halfway between the top of the window and the Crown Moulding. That’s where your rod or mounting board belongs. It gives your eye exactly what it needs — a new line, a new place to rest — and suddenly that window looks taller, the room feels larger and everything just feels more polished and elegant. It’s one of those things that sounds simple but makes an enormous difference, and it’s exactly the kind of detail that separates a professionally designed room from one that’s almost there but not quite.

Tip — That halfway point between your window frame and your Crown Moulding? That’s where the magic happens. It’s not something most people would ever think to do on their own — but once you see it done right, you’ll never look at a window the same way again.

Now there is one exception and I want to make sure you know it. If you have less than 8 inches of wall space above your window — we’re going all the way up. When there isn’t enough room to find that sweet spot, you take everything you can get. Every inch counts and we’re not leaving any of it on the table.

One of the most important things I can tell you about choosing fabric for Panels is this — not all fabrics behave the same way once they’re hanging.

Linen, for example, is gorgeous. But linen wrinkles just looking at it. Because it’s a natural fiber, once those fibers are broken they can’t go back. So it looks wrinkled - and always will. I don’t specify linen for Panels for exactly this reason. But here’s the good news — there are so many beautiful linen-look fabrics that give you all the warmth and texture of linen without any of the heartbreak. ๐Ÿ˜„

A Note About Fabric

A Story About Coral, Cream and a Little Creative Magic

Sometimes the most extraordinary results come from the most unexpected places.

I once worked with a Client who had just moved into a beautiful new home. We had big plans — Dining Room, Kitchen and Living Room all working together in coral, ivory and aqua. Everything was coming together beautifully. Until the fabric for the Living Room was discontinued. Then we found another one we loved. Discontinued. And another. Discontinued.

Oh dear!!

It was really disheartening. But here’s what I know after 32 years — when a door closes, a window opens. Sometimes literally. ๐Ÿ˜„

So I got creative. What if we made our own design? Color blocking — large chunks of coral and cream — for these gorgeous tall windows. I sketched it out for her. She wasn’t completely sure. But she trusted me.

And I knew in my head it was going to be gorgeous.

We chose one wide Panel on the outside edge of each window for maximum drama. Starting with coral, then cream, then a big chunk of coral in the center, another cream section, ending with coral. And for the hardware — a gold and cream finish called Old Hollywood. Stunning.

The math alone took real thought. When you create your own color blocking, you can make the sections any size you want — which means every proportion decision is intentional. Including that little secret about making the bottom sections larger than the top so your eye reads them as equal.

In the end? Bold but not busy. Dramatic and completely unique.

My Client loves it. Her husband loves it. And I love it. :)

That’s what Custom Panels can do for your home. ๐Ÿ’–

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Whatโ€™s the difference between Draperies and Panels?

Panels are individual fabric pieces that hang on either side of a window — they can be purely decorative or fully functional. Draperies typically refers to a fuller, more traditional treatment that can be drawn closed. Both are completely custom at Lady Dianne’s — designed specifically for your windows, your fabric and your home. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  • How high should Panels be hung?

Higher than the window — yes. But “always go to the ceiling” isn’t quite right, and I wish that advice would go away!! ๐Ÿ˜„ The goal is finding that sweet spot halfway between the top of your window and your Crown Moulding — that’s where your eye gets a new line to follow and your window suddenly looks taller and grander. If there’s less than 8 inches of wall above your window, then yes — we go all the way up. But otherwise, halfway is where the magic happens.

  • What kind of lining do you use?

Premium linings — always, no exceptions. Lining protects your fabric from sun damage, adds body and fullness, helps your Panels hang beautifully and makes them last for years. Interlining is added when the fabric or the room calls for it for extra body and luxury. These aren’t extras you have to ask for — they’re simply how we work. ๐Ÿ’–

  • Can I use more than one fabric in my Panels?

Absolutely — and some of my favorite projects have done exactly that!! Color blocking, banding, contrast linings, pieced designs — there are so many beautiful ways to make your Panels completely one of a kind. That’s the whole point of Custom. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  • What about Decorative Hardware?

Oh this is one of my favorite parts!! Decorative Hardware is the jewelry of your Window Treatment — and the right piece can elevate the entire room. We’ll look at finish colors, styles and scale together and find exactly the right piece for your home. You might be surprised how much difference it makes. ๐Ÿ’–

  • Do you do floor to ceiling Panels?

Yes — and they are absolutely spectacular in the right room. Those tall windows that feel impossible to dress? That’s where Custom really shines. I love a dramatic floor to ceiling Panel. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  • Iโ€™ve heard linen is a great fabric for draperies. Is that true?

Linen is beautiful — but it wrinkles just looking at it!! Because it’s a natural fiber, once those fibers are broken they can’t go back. So linen Panels will always look a little wrinkled. I don’t specify linen for this reason — but there are gorgeous linen-look fabrics that give you all the warmth and texture without any of the heartbreak. ๐Ÿ˜„
